The safety issues presented by recalled vehicles can be very dangerous to drivers in the recalled vehicle and in other automobiles. Currently, only about 70% of recalled cars are actually fixed, leaving consumers at risk for car crashes and other disasters. A new federal law has taken this safety issue into consideration and now states that major automakers are required to make their recall information more accessible online. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is set to require that all major automakers and motorcycle manufacturers give free information on their websites about automobile recalls.

While some vehicle manufacturers already have tools on their websites where consumers can find recall info by typing in the VIN or vehicle identification number, this new rule mandates all automakers comply by August 14, 2014. In addition, manufacturers will be required to update the information at least once every week and link the information to NHTSA’s website (safercar.gov).

At present, car owners can visit the safety agency’s site to search by vehicle, make and model year to learn whether a particular model is subject to a recall. However, under the new rule, consumers can see if their vehicle or the one they are thinking of purchasing has or is being recalled and also whether the defects that led to the recall have been fixed. Again, vehicle safety is a priority; especially in Los Angeles where the number of car accidents each year is astoundingly high. If you or a loved one has been injured by a reckless or negligent driver, make sure you speak to an experienced Los Angeles auto accident attorney about your ability to recover financial damages.

Every year, a number of vehicles are recalled for several serious safety defects such as airbag defects, seatbelt issues, tire defects and seatback problems. However, many consumers are not even aware about these recalls which means that vehicles go un-repaired. Unfortunately, it is the consumer who pays the ultimate price. Defective autos can cause crashes that result in serious injuries or even fatalities.

Before purchased a new or used vehicle, visit the manufacturer’s or NHTSA’s website to ensure that the make and model you are considering purchasing has not been the subject of a safety recall.
