As we hear over and over again, driving can be a dangerous activity involving fender benders, rear end accidents, and multi-car pile ups. This is especially true if you live and drive in Southern California. Confirming this is the report released each year by Allstate Insurance Company. Listing the safest cities in the country to drive in, the report gathers accident data from the 200 largest cities in the United States.  For example, Fort Collins, Colorado has ranked the safest city to drive in for three years in a row. As for California, San Diego ranked 127 and Los Angeles ranked 181 out of 200! In other words, we are closer to bottom of the list and certainly not one of the safer large US cities to drive in.

With so many drivers on the road, it is no wonder that Southern Californians get in more auto accidents than those less populated cities. And since it does not appear that many of us are  planning on leaving the state, this means that we need to change how we drive.

Keeping the data about Los Angeles drivers in mind, it seems that Californians could use a little brushing up on safe driving practices. Read on to learn a few driving tips to increase the safety of yourself and your loved ones while on the road…

  • Keep Space – In order to have enough time to react appropriately, drivers need to pay attention to the amount of space they leave between them and the other cars around them. For instance, when a car is traveling at 55 mph it will take around 400 feet to stop and the faster a person is driving the more time it will take to stop.
  • Scan the Road – Los Angeles drivers need to be pay attention to what is going on all around them, not just what is happening directly in front of the car. Therefore, it is best to scan in front of your car every 1 to 15 seconds and to check your rearview and side view mirrors every 2 to 5 seconds.
  • Check Your Blind Spot – While this suggestion may seem obvious, it is amazing how many drivers fail to check their blind spot before making a lane change on the 5, 405, or 10 freeways!
  • Wash Your Car – A clean car and windows can be the difference between being able to see out of your windshield and having to guess at what may be in front of you. Additionally, having dirty windows can make visibility even more difficult when it is bright or when using headlights at night.
  • Get in Position – Before you start driving, take a few moments to correctly position your seat and adjust your mirrors. What worked for the person driving the car before you may not work for you!

While it may be challenging to remain calm while driving in Los Angeles, road rage does not help the situation. And if you or a loved one are injured in an auto accident that is not your fault, contact an experienced auto accident lawyer in Los Angeles for guidance.
