Los Angeles Will Attempt to Make City Safer for Pedestrians, Cyclists with Mobility Plan 2035Los Angeles is notorious for its traffic congestion. From navigating a packed 405 to dodging bicycles on winding, mountainous roads, many in the city are ready for a change.

In August, the Los Angeles city council voted 12 to 2 to approve a new mobility plan which aims to motivate drivers to use other methods of transportation and will aim to make the city safer for bicyclists and pedestrians by 2035.

The goal of the mobility plan is to create “complete” streets, which allow for safe passage of all types of users, including cars, trucks, bicycles, and people on foot.

The mobility plan would add hundreds of miles of bus and bicycle lanes, as well as additional pedestrian safety features like curb extensions, crosswalks, increased sidewalk widths, and pedestrian lights. The plan will also attempt to beautify the city streets by adding landscaped medians and parkways.

Though many are concerned that the focus on bicycles and pedestrian traffic may lead to an increase in traffic congestion, it is clear that something needs to change. Every year, there are over 2,000 bicycle accidents in the city, and an increasing number of cyclists are the victims of hit-and-runs.

Over the past several years, California has consistently led the country in bicycle and pedestrian deaths, though the state of Florida has recently taken the lead. Though new construction and slower traffic may be annoying, saving the lives of people on foot or on bike should be worth the added time and expense.

Being in an accident as a pedestrian or cyclist is an extremely serious matter. Without the shell of a 2,000 pound vehicle around them, these people are likely to suffer grave injuries or death when struck by a car.

At the Trial Law Offices of Bradley I. Kramer, our attorneys believe that everyone has the right to use the road, including bicycles and pedestrians.
