When you book an appointment to see your doctor because you’re not feeling well, it’s not very likely you’re thinking about the possibility of your doctor making errors in your treatment. Luckily, such errors don’t happen in most cases, but errors do happen and there are a number of common errors made by physicians and other health care professionals which can lead to a medical malpractice claim.
The following are some of the more common types of errors made by health care professionals in medical malpractice cases:

  • Error in diagnosis: This most commonly occurs when a doctor gives an inaccurate diagnosis – a misdiagnosis – or when a doctor provides a delayed diagnosis. Both a misdiagnosis and a delayed diagnosis can have a significant negative impact on a patient as such errors in diagnosis generally mean the correct treatment for the patient’s condition is delayed until an accurate diagnosis is made.
  • Errors in medication. These errors can range from prescribing the wrong medication for an accurate diagnosis, to prescribing the wrong prescription because of an inaccurate diagnosis, to prescribing the right medication but in the wrong dosage. Again, the potential for harm can be great depending on the circumstances of the error.
  • Errors in childbirth. Errors in childbirth can occur in any stage of the pregnancy and childbirth process, from prenatal care to the delivery itself. These errors can sometimes result in birth injuries such as cerebral palsy and sometimes even death.
  • Errors during surgical. Unfortunately, a number of things can go wrong during surgery due to the surgeon’s negligence, such as operating on the wrong part of the body or leaving instruments inside the body.
  • Errors in the application of anesthesia. An anesthesiologist is responsible for giving the right dose of anesthetic to each individual patient, and errors in the amount of anesthesia, as well as in other areas such as failing to properly monitor a patient who’s been given anesthesia, can sometimes results in grave harm to a patient.
