What Are the Most Dangerous Types of Toys for Children?

We buy them the toys we know they’ll love, but other than a choking hazard warning for young children, toys generally do not come with safety or caution labels. But is the danger inherent in a toy something we need to consider when purchasing a play item for our child?

Just in time for this holiday season, a new study has come out which highlights which toys are the most dangerous for our children. According to the study, every hour 18 toy-related injuries occur that are serious enough to send children to the emergency room.

And the most dangerous types of toys for children? Ride-on toys, such as scooters, wagons, tricycles and motor-powered kid-sized vehicles. Bicycles were excluded from the study because they are classified as vehicles. Out of these various riding toys, the one that was associated with the most injuries was the foot-powered scooter.

The statistics show that, between 1990 and 2011, toy-related injuries sent approximately 3,278,073 under age 18 to the emergency room, with 46 percent of the injuries resulting from falls and 22 percent from collisions. There was also a 61 percent increase in the number of toy-related injuries from 1990 to 2011, an increase that a coauthor of the study, Dr. Gary Smith, noted appeared to be driven by the rising popularity of scooters.

But what if your child has his or her heart set on a scooter this year? According to Smith, safety precautions while riding a scooter are very important, and if there’s one thing a parent can do to help prevent a serious injury in the event of an accident while riding a scooter, it’s to make sure their child is wearing a helmet.

For younger children, toys with small parts continue to be a major concern, with choking-related injuries accounting for 11 percent of injuries overall. The best thing that parents can do when it comes to toys for younger children is to choose age-appropriate toys, and check for choking hazard warnings on toys.
