If you’ve ever been involved in a car accident, you know that things can get quite chaotic in the aftermath. Additionally, most people feel at least a little shaken, even if the accident was just a minor fender bender. Despite the chaos of the situation, it’s important, however, for you to collect information, if you can, about certain things in the aftermath of an accident.
Your goal after an accident should be to document information that may be helpful in the event you later wish to file an insurance claim. Even if the accident seems like a minor one, it’s still important to collect as much information as you can. For example, you may have sustained an injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident, the symptoms of which may not become apparent until some time after the accident. While you may not have felt an insurance claim was necessary right after the accident, you may feel differently once any injuries sustained manifest themselves.
It’s a good idea, then, to document all of the following after an automobile accident:
• Drivers and passengers of the vehicles involved: Collect the names and contact information of any of the people involved in the accident. Additionally, obtain driver’s licence numbers and insurance information from the drivers involved.
• Witnesses. Collect the names and contact information of witnesses to the accident. You may also want to ask them what they saw and take notes of your conversation with them.
• Vehicle details. Collect information about the make, color, model number and licence plate numbers of all the vehicles involved in the accident.
• Photos. If you have a camera on your phone or otherwise have access to a camera, take photos of the scene of the accident, paying particular attention to the positioning of the vehicles, if the cars haven’t yet been moved, and any damage done to the vehicles involved.
It may seem like a waste of time collecting information and documenting the scene with photos, especially if the accident seems minor to you at the time, but if you do later decide you want to pursue a claim against the other driver or drivers, having all of this information on hand will be very helpful.
