Where Does California Rank in a National Survey of Worst Drivers?

Drivers here in The Golden State rank among the country’s worst when it comes to bad driving habits. This is according to a recently released report from CarInsuranceComparison.com, an auto insurance comparison website that used statistics and other data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. When comparing all fifty states plus Washington, D.C., the report places California 18th in a ranking of worst drivers. A dubious honor, to be sure!

Some of the categories of behaviors and results considered when making the rankings include seatbelt use, driving without a valid license, drunken driving, speeding, and even fatality rates for accidents. Perhaps one of the reasons that California ranks so high in this report has to do with the congested highways and city traffic that many Californians deal with on a regular basis. City drivers tend to be more impatient and more prone to road rage than their country counterparts. Surprisingly, though, the number one spot in the worst driver rankings went to Montana – one of the most sparsely populated states in the country, and not one known for its metro driving.

Here in California, our state laws place heavy restrictions on drivers’ use of mobile phones, including a blanket prohibition on the use of handheld phones while driving. Our Los Angeles injury lawyers are well-acquainted with the devastating results that occur when these laws are broken. We urge clients and the public at large to minimize distractions while driving, since the failure to do so can not only result in injury to yourself or others, but also cause you to be liable for those injuries. National Distracted Driving Awareness Month is just around the corner in April, so expect to see many upcoming campaigns here in Los Angeles focused on getting the word out to drivers.

Considering California’s rankings when it comes to bad driving, it’s no surprise to anyone that serious accidents occur on our roadways every day.
