Ten Tips for Avoiding Distracted Driving

Most of us know the drill by now. Don’t text or use your phone while you’re driving. But despite knowing about the dangers of distracted driving, it can be very difficult not to pick up that phone when it rings, or when you hear that distinctive sound alerting you to the fact that a text has arrived. And there’s also the matter of other distractions that aren’t related to your phone at all.

Some good ways to eliminate the temptation to engage in distracted driving? Check out the following tips:

  1. Turn your phone off or set it to silent when you get into your car. And then put it somewhere, like the glove compartment, where you won’t be able to see its screen light up with a notification while you’re driving.
  2. Use the hashtag #X to let your friends and family know you’ll be driving and won’t be able to text them or respond to them on social media until you arrive at your destination.
  3. If you’ll be using an unfamiliar route to get to your destination, be prepared before you drive. Key your destination into your GPS first before driving, or if you’re using maps, check them before you get into the car and familiarize yourself with the route you’ll be taking.
  4. If you find you absolutely have to consult a map along the way, pull over first.
  5. Get your passengers to find songs on the MP3 player or the right station on the radio, or take that call or answer that text.
  6. Drop something? Don’t try to reach for it while you’re driving. Wait until you’ve properly pulled over.
  7. Kids fighting or crying? Pull over first before trying to resolve the situation.
  8. If your pet has come along for the ride, make sure he or she is properly secured in a carrier.
  9. Don’t eat or drink while driving. Yes, that coffee can wait. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study, eating and drinking while driving is the main cause of traffic accidents, with coffee being the worse culprit.
  10. No reading, or grooming or any other activity that will take your eyes off the road. Save the multi-tasking for when you get out from behind the wheel.
